Juneteenth in Virginia arrives at a unique time of year.
School lets out, the tidal rivers hum with boats, and community calendars quickly fill to the brim. Out in the fields, farmers keep one eye on the soil and the other on the horizon. Somewhere between the Father’s Day cookouts, morning church services, and the quiet arrival of the summer solstice, a distinct rhythm settles over the Northern Neck, the Middle Peninsula, and Caroline County. It’s a sense of place that is hard to explain to outsiders, but instantly understood by those who live it.
This year, as the season turns, Juneteenth lands on the calendar not just as a holiday, but as an invitation to reflect on a single, powerful word: opportunity.
Most of us know the history. On June 19, 1865, word finally reached the enslaved people of Galveston, Texas, that they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. But as I look out at our slice of Virginia this week, I find myself thinking less about the date itself, and more about the generations who inherited it.

The years after a historic milestone are where the real weight of freedom rests. It’s found in the decades spent building families, clearing land, starting small businesses, educating children, and quietly carving out paths that didn’t exist the day before. The progress we walk past every day in rural Virginia didn’t arrive overnight; it was built square-foot by square-foot by people who stubbornly believed tomorrow could be better than today.

As I’ve grown older, and especially since becoming a father, my focus has shifted from success to opportunity. Success is backward-looking; it’s a tally of what has already been achieved. Opportunity is forward-looking. It’s a measure of what is suddenly possible.

I think about the countless men and women she will never meet whose perseverance, faith, and sacrifice helped make that kind of community possible.
Opportunity, Service, and Community
That stewardship is woven into the very fabric of our region. One of the greatest privileges of living and working here is that people still understand what it means to invest in things bigger than themselves. You see it in our volunteer fire departments, civic clubs, and local congregations. These moments rarely make the evening news, but they are the bedrock of legacy.
