The Right Mission Begins with the Right Partners
There is a common misconception that meaningful community projects begin with a brilliant concept. In reality, they begin with relationships. Every successful community initiative, nonprofit collaboration, or neighborhood improvement project starts long before the first volunteer arrives. Real, impactful veteran support begins with trust. We build this trust quietly over time through shared experiences, consistent service, and a collective commitment to something far greater than ourselves.
Phyllis and I have learned this lesson repeatedly throughout our lives. Whether during my military and Department of Defense career, through our years in business, or while raising our family, we have discovered a fundamental truth. The strongest community partnerships rarely form out of sudden convenience or immediate need. Instead, they grow when you show up, keep your word, and serve alongside people who share your core values.
When we first started planning the Real Property Management Regions Day of Service, we weren’t just looking for names to fill a roster. We were looking for the right partners. We knew that if we were going to ask our neighborhood to trust us with an initiative dedicated to local veteran support, we first needed to surround ourselves with leaders who had already earned our deepest respect.
A Partnership Years in the Making
Our connection with The 516 Project Ministry did not begin because we suddenly decided to organize a Day of Service. We have supported their faith-based disaster relief and home repair mission for several years, quietly watching them serve families across our region. Time after time, we have witnessed volunteers give up their weekends, local businesses donate materials, and churches rally behind neighbors in need until complete strangers became lifelong friends.
Lessons from Warsaw, Virginia
One project, however, changed the way we looked at community partnerships. Last year, while friends were visiting us from out of town, Phyllis and I volunteered to provide lunch for a 516 Project build site in Warsaw, Virginia. The mission was to construct a wheelchair-accessible ramp for a local family facing severe mobility challenges.
What many onlookers did not see was the extensive groundwork laid before a single hammer was lifted. The ministry had spent weeks working closely with local officials, navigating municipal approvals, coordinating volunteer schedules, and securing resources. By the time the community gathered that morning, the hardest logistical obstacles had already been cleared behind the scenes.
As we served lunch and watched the team work, something unexpected happened. Our out-of-town guests, who had simply come to spend a casual weekend with us, were so inspired by the scene that they asked to pick up tools and help. No one recruited them, and no one pressured them. They simply saw people serving people and felt an instinctual desire to become part of it.
Watching our friends step forward reminded us of a core belief. People rarely join a mission because someone convinces them to. They join because they are inspired by what they see. Authentic service invites others into something bigger than themselves. When people witness humility, authenticity, and genuine leadership, they rarely ask, “Why are you doing this?” Instead, they ask, “How can I help?” They weren’t just building a ramp. They were building the very fabric of our community.
Veteran Support: Trust Is Earned Long Before It’s Needed
One of the definitive lessons of leadership is that trust is never built during the heat of a major project. It grows quietly in the moments that precede it. It grows through consistency, integrity, and observing how people treat others when there are no cameras, no applause, and no expectations of public recognition. This principle holds true in business, in friendships, in marriage, and certainly in the way we provide targeted veteran support and serve our community through property management.

That is precisely what we found with The 516 Project Ministry. Both of our organizations firmly believe that people must always come before projects. We believe that every family deserves dignity, and we understand that lasting regional change happens when communities work together rather than in isolated silos. These shared values became the bedrock of our current endeavor.
Community Is a Team Sport
No single organization can lift a community by itself. Businesses, churches, nonprofits, and government agencies cannot solve local challenges in isolation. However, when each entity contributes its distinct strengths, remarkable transformations begin to happen.

Local businesses have offered generous sponsorships, skilled tradesmen are raising their hands, and civic partners are asking where they can best fit. It is an incredibly humbling reminder that while one organization may start the conversation, it takes an entire community to build a true movement.
There Is Room for Everyone
We often hear well-meaning neighbors say, “I’d love to help, but I don’t have construction skills.” The truth is, impactful community service has never been about possessing a perfect technical skill set; it is about a willingness to show up.
The beauty of serving your community is that there is a place for everyone. While some volunteers build and paint, others are needed to coordinate supply lines, prepare meals, transport equipment, or simply sit with a veteran family to let them know their sacrifices are remembered. Every contribution matters. Every act of kindness carries weight.

Leadership Reflection

Long before anyone picks up a paintbrush or signs a volunteer waiver, the success of a project is determined by the relationships established in the years prior.
As we continue preparing for our local Day of Service on September 18, we are profoundly grateful to walk alongside our partners, local real estate professionals, and neighbors who believe that communities become stronger when we choose to invest in one another. In the end, the right mission has never been about finding the most partners, it is about finding the right ones.
