When Your Faith Is Questioned in Business: Why Actions Speak Louder Than Labels

There’s a moment that comes, especially when you’re open about your faith and how you live your life, where your faith is questioned in business.
Not because of how you show up.
Not because of how you lead.
But because of what they think they know.
I experienced that recently.
And it wasn’t about business.
It was about my faith, because of my affiliation with Freemasonry.
I don’t take that lightly.
I don’t wear my faith as a label. I don’t use it as a marketing angle.
For me, it shows up in how I operate every single day.
It shows up in:
- How I treat people
- How I lead our team
- How we serve our residents and owners
- How we give back to our communities across the Virginia Northern Neck, Virginia Middle Peninsula, and Caroline County
Faith, for me, is not something I explain to gain approval.
It’s something I live.
And yes, Freemasonry was part of that conversation.
So let’s be clear about that.
I’ve been a Freemason since 1999.
This isn’t something I’m loosely connected to.
This isn’t something I’m figuring out.
It’s part of my life.
And it’s not in conflict with my faith, it’s consistent with how I choose to live it.
Freemasonry has been widely discussed and documented over time, but like many institutions, it is often misunderstood. You can read more about its history here.
Over the years, what it has reinforced in me is simple:
- Discipline
- Accountability
- Brotherhood
- Service to others
- Giving without recognition
Not theory. Not talk. Practice.

So when assumptions are made without that understanding, I don’t take it personally, but I do take it seriously.
Because I don’t measure anything in my life by perception.
I measure it by what it produces.
Does it produce better character?
Stronger leadership?
A deeper commitment to serve others?
If the answer is yes, it has value.
And the results in my life, personally, professionally, and in how I serve are something I stand on with complete clarity.
Moments where your faith is questioned in business are not about explanation, they’re about how you respond.
There are still moments, even today, where people will form conclusions about you based on affiliations, assumptions, or secondhand information.
And sometimes those conclusions go further than they should.
They lead to questions about your integrity.
Your beliefs.
Whether you “fit” someone else’s definition.
When Your Faith Is Questioned in Business
Let me be clear about where I stand.
I am a Christian.
Not by label.
Not by convenience.
But by conviction, and by how I choose to live, lead, and serve.
And I’m comfortable standing on that without needing to defend it.
Not everything is always fully understood from the outside.
And that’s okay.
Because understanding isn’t what defines you.
What you do consistently, does.
So if there’s one thing I stand on, it’s this:
I don’t need to convince anyone of who I am.
I’ll let how I live, how I lead, how I give, and how I serve speak for itself.
Every single day.
