This reflection started as part of our Ruperto’s First Cup series, our Monday reset on purpose, mindset, and legacy.
When Effort Doesn’t Match Results
Sometimes the moments that shape us most in business aren’t the ones we plan for. They’re the ones that humble us, the seasons where effort doesn’t match outcome, and you start to wonder if the climb is still worth it.
Coming home from our industry reunion this year, Phyllis and I took a long look at where we are, what we’ve built, and what it really means to grow. The truth is, business growth isn’t always visible, especially in real estate and property management. Some seasons look like success; others just look like work. But all of them count.
The Weight of the Work
In property management, and honestly, in any business, we pour in everything: our time, our families, our sanity, our hearts. We chase improvement, process, and performance. We do everything right and still, sometimes, it feels like we’re running uphill with no finish line in sight.
That’s the strange kind of pain every small business owner understands. But the reality is, growth mindset means showing up even when the results don’t show yet.
For us, this year’s RPM Reunion was both inspiring and heavy. We were surrounded by peers who understand what this grind really costs. Some cheered us on. Others barely noticed. And that’s okay, because leadership often means walking the hard road before anyone else believes in your direction. We love what RPM stands for and we’re proud to be part of that national standard, and the broader Neighborly® family that supports homeowners across the country.

When Recognition Hits Different
Our peers gave us the Momentum Peer Choice Award, and that moment meant everything. It wasn’t about numbers or rankings, it was about heart.
It reminded us that in property management, true impact comes when others see your integrity before your metrics. They saw how much we care, not just about our own growth, but about helping others rise too. That’s what a business growth mindset really is: leading with authenticity, not ego.
Lessons from the Plateau
I’ve always held myself to a high standard. Excellence has never been optional, it’s part of who we are. But even when you’re performing at a high level, there are seasons that stretch you differently a concept often described as part of a growth mindset in leadership development (Harvard Business Review).
This chapter hasn’t been about skill, it’s been about capacity. It’s tested our patience, perspective, and endurance more than our competence. And honestly, that’s where the real growth happens.
Because the higher you climb, the harder it becomes to measure progress by the usual metrics. You start focusing less on doing better than others and more on becoming better within yourself. That’s not defeat, that’s refinement. And it’s exactly what separates the good from the great.
Finding Your Why (Again)
Back in Virginia, it all comes into focus. We’re still standing. Still showing up. Still believing.
Our “why” has always been clear. Her name is Laila’h Victoria Guasp. And because of her, quitting isn’t on the table.
Business will test your limits, but legacy will remind you why you started. That’s the difference between growth and burnout: remembering who you’re doing it for.
Gratitude: The Real Return on Investment
Behind every business that survives the grind is a community that refuses to let you give up, mentors, peers, and partners who remind you that your story still matters. We’re grateful for every person who’s listened, encouraged, or shared wisdom along the way. That support has been our fuel, our mirror, and our anchor.
It’s proof that success isn’t a solo journey, it’s built by a tribe that believes in your potential even when you doubt it yourself.
What Growth Really Looks Like
- We can’t measure ourselves by someone else’s chapter.
- Our path isn’t linear, it’s layered with legacy, love, and purpose.
- Feeling stuck doesn’t mean we are stuck; it means we care enough to want more.
- Sometimes “not quitting” is the win.
- When others see your heart before your numbers, that’s impact, not business.
Back to Purpose
We’re home now, a little tired, but not defeated. A little heavy, but grounded.
Tomorrow, it’s back to work. Back to purpose. Back to the mission: Protect the Asset. Grow the Legacy. Level Up.
