Real Time in a Place Full of Story
We don’t live in Westmoreland County, but we’re there a lot. Over the years, we’ve walked its quiet streets, grabbed coffee with local clients, explored its trails, and helped care for properties that hold deep family history.
Some of our favorite moments haven’t been during appointments. They’ve been the in-between times, like an early morning coffee at Art of Coffee in Montross, or stopping at Westmoreland State Park with our daughter to dig for shark teeth after a long workday.
This area doesn’t need to announce itself, it grows on you with every visit. That’s what keeps bringing us back.
What Makes Westmoreland County So Special?
It’s one of those places where you can feel the past without getting stuck in it.
Yes, George Washington and James Monroe were born here. Yes, the Lee family helped shape early American history. But Westmoreland’s charm is more than its famous names.
It’s in:
- Locals who care about preserving what makes the community unique
- Hidden spots like the Kinsale Museum, still sharing stories from the War of 1812
- And the fact that you can still find waterfront property that isn’t priced like a Manhattan penthouse
It’s history, hospitality, and breathing room—tucked between two rivers.
Places We Keep Coming Back To
Art of Coffee – Montross
Small-town coffee shop with good food and even better conversation. It’s where we’ve had some of our most unexpected “business” meetings.
The Art Center of Montross
Easy to miss if you don’t know it’s there—but a true local treasure. Rotating art, handmade gifts, and a whole lot of talent packed into one creative space.
Westmoreland State Park
We recommend it to visiting families all the time. The views are peaceful, and the fossil beach is just plain fun for kids and adults alike.
The Lighthouse – Coles Point
Fresh seafood, river breeze, and a sunset that’ll stop you mid-sentence.
A History That Still Feels Alive
Stratford Hall
Even if you’re not a history buff, Stratford Hall will leave an impression. It’s the birthplace of Robert E. Lee, but it stretches back further, home to the influential Lee family, including Richard Henry Lee, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Set on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River, the house is breathtaking—but it’s the land, the trails, and the quiet stories in the air that make it unforgettable. It’s not just a tour, it’s an experience that puts the history of Westmoreland into perspective.
George Washington’s Birthplace – Popes Creek
Where the first president of the United States began. The grounds include gardens, trails, and a working colonial farm.
James Monroe’s Birthplace
A quieter stop, but powerful in its simplicity. The modest beginnings of the 5th U.S. president are honored in a way that feels humble and real.
Kinsale Museum
Preserving the story of a small harbor town that once stood up to a British raid in the War of 1812. Small, yes—but mighty.
