A late-night coffee, a tearful question, and the why behind our work with ASSIST Disability Services, our family, and our community. Our Heart For Giving!
It was late at night, me and Phyllis sitting in bed, sipping coffee (what’s new? 😅), talking about the future of a small but mighty organization that had already captured our hearts: ASSIST Disability Services, headquartered in Fredericksburg, Virginia but born in King George County.
We asked ourselves: “What can we do to truly elevate them? How do we help bring more attention, more resources, and more hope to the families they serve?”
If you know Phyllis, you know she doesn’t do anything halfway. She dreams in bold colors, in big impact, in go big or go home. Out of that conversation came the idea for what we believe will become the event of the year on November 2026, The Murder Mystery Gala.
A Dinner That Became a Turning Point
We shared our vision with ASSIST leaders Pam Kuper and Cheryl Yancey a while back, and last week we sat down for a planning dinner so they could carry the concept to their Board of Directors.
“Why are you guys doing this?”
When Pam asked that, her eyes filled with tears. For a moment, we were quiet, because the answer wasn’t about strategy or business. It was about something deeper that started long before Real Property Management Regions existed.
Service Is the Foundation of Our Story
Phyllis and I have been serving our communities we’ve lived in since the day we met, over 20 years ago. While other couples planned date nights, we showed up to volunteer. That heartbeat of service shaped our relationship, our family, and ultimately our work at Real Property Management Regions.
My love for Freemasonry has only deepened that calling. As a Freemason, I try to live the values of brotherly love, relief, and truth, serving my fellow man with integrity, compassion, and action. That’s why giving isn’t something “extra” we tack on at Real Property Management Regions. It’s who we are. It’s how we lead.
Why ASSIST Matters
ASSIST Disability Services exists to provide support, resources, and relief to families of children with disabilities, families who can feel unseen or overwhelmed by the challenges they face.
For us, their mission is personal. Our daughter, Laila’h, reminds us every day of how vital that support is. We’re blessed to provide so much for her, but we know not every family has that same blessing. That’s why we’re all in. Not halfway. Not when it’s convenient. But fully, with everything we’ve got.
More Than One Way to Give
Supporting ASSIST is one piece of our story, but giving back takes many forms. Another way we serve is through The Landlord’s Almanac – Virginia Northern Neck, a group we launched to educate, support, and connect local landlords.
The idea was inspired by the original Landlord’s Almanac in Alaska, created by Kassandra Taggart. We loved how it brought landlords together, and we knew the Virginia Northern Neck needed its own version, one focused on education, community support, and real conversations about what it means to be a landlord here in Virginia.
Our Answer
So when Pam asked, “Why are you guys doing this?” our answer wasn’t polished. It wasn’t rehearsed. But it was true.
Because it’s who we are. Because it’s who we’ve always been. Because how could we not?
