Legacy Over Luxury: How One Northern Neck Landowner Freed 500 People, and What It Teaches Us About Real Estate Today

Illustrated portrait of Robert Carter III, Virginia landowner from Westmoreland CountyWhen most people think of real estate in the Virginia Northern Neck, they picture waterfront properties, quiet farmland, and long-standing family estates. But this region also holds stories that changed American history, and one of the most powerful begins in Westmoreland County, just miles from where many of our clients live, invest, and manage their homes.  Northern Neck property management legacy

In the late 1700s, Robert Carter III owned one of the largest estates in Virginia: Nomini Hall. As one of the wealthiest men in the colonies, he held vast land holdings across what we now know as Westmoreland, King George, and Caroline counties, and over 500 enslaved individuals.

But in 1791, Carter did something unheard of.

He gave it up.

In a document known as the Deed of Gift, Robert Carter III quietly began freeing every single enslaved person he owned, the largest manumission in U.S. history. It took over a decade to complete and was done with no political advantage or public reward.

He simply believed it was the right thing to do.

But Carter’s story reminds us that land isn’t just something to profit from, it’s something to steward.

At Real Property ManagementRegions, we serve homeowners across the Northern Neck, Tappahannock, King & Queen, and Caroline County with that same mindset: manage your property like it matters, because it does. Whether you own one home or a portfolio of rentals, your property is part of the region’s living story, and your legacy.

We manage about-us every home like it’s ours, because our owners trust us to steward what matters most to them.
