A Place on the Calendar | Day of Service Journal Part 6

A full calendar representing the competing business, family, and community commitments behind the Real Property Management Regions Day of Service

Part 6 of The Day of Service Journal

In last week’s chapter, Planning Before the Work Begins, we shared some of the quiet preparation required long before volunteers arrive or anyone picks up a hammer. This week, the journey became less about what needed to be planned and more about something every plan requires: time.

I opened my calendar this week looking for one open hour, honestly believing finding it wouldn’t be that difficult.

Before Monday had even begun, the week was already spoken for. Property inspections, move-outs, move-ins, lease signings, vendor meetings, owner consultations, appointments at Children’s Hospital, and Lailah’s first week with her new in-home therapy team had already claimed nearly every available space. Like most weeks in property management, the schedule looked organized on Sunday evening and completely different by Tuesday afternoon.

That’s simply the nature of our business. Every day begins with a plan, but our responsibility is to adapt when life happens. A maintenance emergency can’t wait until tomorrow. A resident with an urgent concern deserves an answer. An owner trusting us with one of their largest investments deserves thoughtful guidance. Behind every task is a person depending on us to do it well, and that’s a responsibility we never take lightly.

Looking across that packed calendar, I caught myself asking the wrong question.

Where can we squeeze this meeting in?

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that wasn’t the right perspective. If something truly matters, it shouldn’t have to survive on whatever time happens to be left over. The calendar doesn’t just tell us where our time goes; it quietly reveals what we’ve decided is important enough to protect.

That realization stayed with me longer than I expected.

Every day, we make hundreds of small decisions that most people never see. Which contractor to call. Whether a repair can wait another day. How to help an owner make a difficult decision. How to support a resident through a stressful situation. Property management often looks like systems and schedules from the outside. From the inside, it’s really about stewardship—of homes, investments, and the people connected to them.

Meaningful service begins long before the work itself. It begins with the decisions, conversations, and time protected along the way.

Maybe that’s why one meeting on our calendar felt different.

Next week, our leadership team will gather for what may become one of the most important meetings of our season. We won’t be reviewing occupancy reports or discussing maintenance schedules. Instead, we’ll begin reading through nominations and selecting the veteran family we’ll have the privilege of serving during this year’s Day of Service.

It won’t produce a work order, generate revenue, or result in a signed lease. Yet every decision that follows over the coming weeks will begin in that room.

Before volunteers arrive, before supplies are ordered, before a single project is planned, there’s a family whose story we’re about to learn. Choosing that family isn’t simply another item on our checklist. It’s the moment we remind ourselves that this has never been about completing a project. It’s about serving people with the same care, respect, and intentionality we try to bring to our work every day.

When I looked back at my calendar later that evening, it was still just as full as it had been that morning. The maintenance requests were still there. The inspections hadn’t disappeared. Children’s National was still on the schedule, and Laila’h’s therapy appointments were exactly where they needed to be. Nothing had slowed down.

We simply decided that one meeting deserved a protected place on the calendar.

Because sometimes the first act of service isn’t picking up a paintbrush or a hammer. It’s deciding that people deserve your time before they ever receive your help.

That belief isn’t unique to us. Across the country, organizations and volunteers dedicate their time to strengthening their communities through service. Programs like the
AmeriCorps National Day of Service,
remind us that meaningful change begins when people intentionally make room to serve others.
